History - the Schulau Ferry Station yesterday and today

Where today the Ferry Station Schulau is located, there was from 1543 to 1864 one of the oldest farms of Schulau until the current building was constructed as a farmhouse. In 1875 the "Ferry Station with the lovely view on the Elbe" got the license to sell alcoholic beverages and in 1887 a dance hall was built.

In 1939 the building was once again extended, but shortly afterwards it was used as military hospital and first-aid room by the British Army because of the war.

Only in 1949 the Ferry Station Schulau was once again opened and has been managed since then by the Behnke family. In 1952 Otto Friedrich Behnke erected and opened the ship welcoming station named "Willkomm-Höft".

In 1980 a protective wall against the storm tide was erected near the ferry station because the building had been badly damaged in 1962 and in 1976 by storm tides.
